Good value for trying models

As a new user, I was looking for the most cost-effective way to try various LLMs. OpenRouter offered some free credits upon sign-up, which was a good incentive. I used them to test GPT-4o and Mistral Large. It felt like a solid deal to compare models without committing to separate subscriptions. The pricing model seems pretty transparent too.

Convenient, mostly

The unified API is incredibly convenient for switching between models like Gemini Pro 1.5 and DeepSeek V2. I found the usage analytics helpful for keeping track of my token spend. Delivery of credits was instant, and the API latency was decent. My only small gripe is that the documentation for some of the newer models felt a bit sparse in places, making initial integration a little slower than expected.

Easy to get started

Needed to test out some LLMs for a side project. OpenRouter was super easy. Got some free credits when I signed up, which was cool. Played around with Claude 3.5 Sonnet and Llama 3.1 405B in the chat interface. It just worked, you know? Definitely beats signing up everywhere.

Always a smooth experience

I've used OpenRouter several times now for different projects. This last time I topped up my credits for an API integration using GPT-4o. It was as reliable as ever. The credits went through instantly, and the API calls were seamless. Just like my previous orders, no surprises.

Detailed API experience

I signed up for OpenRouter specifically to use the Image Generation API with Stable Diffusion XL. Ordering credits was straightforward, and the process was quick. The API key landed in my inbox within a minute. Integration into my Python script was smooth thanks to their clear API documentation. I did have a question about token usage monitoring, and customer support got back to me within a few hours, which was good. The model's performance was consistent, and the overall experience from sign-up to deployment was well-managed.

Love this platform!

OpenRouter is amazing! I just integrated their API for Qwen 2.5 into my app and it's fantastic. The model routing feature saved me so much hassle. I'm telling all my developer friends about it. Seriously, if you're working with LLMs, you need to use this!

How does OpenRouter compare to something like Together AI or Poe for general LLM access? Is there a noticeable latency difference?

J Jennifer Adams 1 month ago
I've tried Together AI before, and honestly, OpenRouter feels pretty snappy. Haven't noticed any major latency issues with their API, seems comparable to direct access most of the time.

It's generally pretty good on latency. I mainly use it because I can switch models so easily without changing my code too much. Poe is more of a chat interface, I think, so not really a direct competitor for API access. OpenRouter is more for developers.

Hey, thinking about trying OpenRouter, mostly for GPT-4o and Claude. Is it actually cheaper than going direct to OpenAI or Anthropic?

B Brandon 3 weeks ago
Yeah, for sure. I've been using it for a few months now, and my bills are definitely lower than when I was hitting up OpenAI directly. Plus, you get to compare models easily.

It can be! Depends on your usage, but a lot of the models, especially the popular ones, are priced pretty competitively, sometimes even better than direct. They also have those volume discounts if you're burning a lot of tokens.

Looking for any promo codes or ways to get some free credits to test this out. Is there a referral program or anything?

J James M. 1 week ago
They often have free starting credits for new users, like a dollar or two. Also, keep an eye out for referral links, those usually give you a bonus when you sign up through someone else's link.

Yeah, I got some free credits when I first signed up. And I know they sometimes do developer grants too, so if you're building something cool, you might be able to get some extra. No traditional coupon codes though, it's all credit injections.

Anyone know how the whole credit thing works? Like, do they expire or can you get a refund if you don't use them all?

S Susan Moore 2 weeks ago
Credits don't expire, which is nice. I had some sitting for ages and they were still there. As for refunds, I think it's a no-go for unused ones, though I haven't personally tried.

Nah, credits are forever, basically. You can't get a refund though, afaik. It's like buying gift cards, once you have them, they're yours to use or lose.
